Students from Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart received awards at Princeton University’s Martin Luther King Day Celebration on Jan. 21.
Six students were awarded for their submissions to the university’s literary and video contests.
This year, the university asked New Jersey students to create a work that explains the struggles society faces while trying to become an environment where individuals are comfortable being and expressing themselves.
Seventh thorough 12th graders were asked to identify a characteristic or trait that might cause someone feel isolated, and propose ways in which individuals can take action to overcome differences and foster inclusion.
Head of School Patty Fagin said Stuart Country Day School said the contest encouraged students to think about creating an inclusive society.
“Our Stuart community embraces girls of all backgrounds, and we encourage our girls to know the issues and act with compassion,” Fagin said, “we are grateful to Princeton University for offering all students in New Jersey the opportunity to really consider the issues associated with diversity and inclusion, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”
The celebration committee selected six Stuart students as winners in various age groups.
Seventh grader Eloise Yang of Princeton won first place in the seventh through eighth grade division. Denay Smith, a seventh grader from Ewing won third.
Freshman Hayley Siegel of Princeton was the co-winner of the ninth through 10 grade division.
Seniors Lu Chen of Trenton, Sara McArthur of Hopewell and Paul-Anne Robb of Trenton won first, second and third place respectively in the 11th through 12th grade division.
