Plenty of ways to celebrate America’s 240th birthday

Plenty of fireworks and festivals with live music will be available for the celebration of Independence Day this year in and around Mercer County.

In Hamilton, there will be a concert and fireworks at Veterans Park’s Kuser Road entrance on Friday, July 1. The concert will begin at 6 p.m. and the fireworks will take place after dark. The rain date is July 2. For more information, go to hamiltonnj.com/fireworks.

Bordentown will hold its traditional celebrations with fireworks, a patriotic concert and fish derby the July 4 weekend. The weekend celebrations will begin on Friday, July 1 with fireworks at Joseph Lawrence Park from 6 p.m. to dusk. The Patriotic concert will be from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, July 2 at the Bordentown Regional High School on Ward Avenue. Following that will be the annual Fish Derby on Sunday, July 3 at Northern Community Park, located on Groveville Road. Starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday is the free registration for the derby, followed by a presentation and stocking the pond at 9:30. From 10 a.m. to noon will be the derby during which participants catch fish and can win trophies and prizes for winning contests such as catching the largest fish. On July 1, 2 and 3, the Open Air Theatre at Washington Crossing State Park, 355 Washington Crossing Pennington Road in Titusville, will perform “Stars N’ Stripes,” which features patriotic songs by some of America’s most notable composers. Find out more at dpacatoat.com.

The tradition of musket firing will continue at Washington Crossing on July 2 at 2 p.m. On July 4 history will be brought to life with historian demonstrations, signing a replica of the Declaration of Independence, tours of historic buildings and the opportunity to see a military encampment. Princeton’s Morven Museum and Garden plans to hold its annual July 4 Jubilee on Monday from 12-3 p.m. There will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence at the museum of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration. The Princeton Battlefield State Park will have re-enactments, tours and other family events on Monday, July 4 from 11-4 p.m. The park is located at 500 Mercer Street. For more information go to state.nj.us.

There will be fireworks at the Princeton University sports fields next to the stadium at dusk. The fields will open at 7 p.m. and the fireworks will begin at dusk.

Celebrations in East Windsor at Etra Lake Park, located on Disbrow Hill Road, will include live bands such as Jerry Rife’s Rhythm Kings, the Dixieland Jazz Band and the Trenton Brass Quintet Plus One followed by fireworks at 9 p.m. For details go to east-windsor.nj.us.

Ewing will have a fireworks celebration July 2 at 5 p.m. on Green Lane at The College of New Jersey. The event will feature music by the Classic Rockers, Masters of Entertainment and Miss Amy. There will also be food, craft vendors, reenactors and free rides. For children, there will be a Kids Korner with face painting, coloring, a magician and a balloon artist. The rain date is July 3. Rider University will hold Lawrence Township’s Independence Day celebration with a concert and fireworks again this year on Friday, July 1. Kindred Spirits will perform on campus at 7:30 p.m., followed by fireworks after dark.

The Hopewell Valley Veterans Association, Inc. will host a concert and fireworks at Alliger Park to celebrate Independence Day Friday, July 8. The event starts at 6 p.m. with a classic car exhibit, followed by the U.S. Army Band Concert at 7:30 p.m. The night concludes with a fireworks display at dark. Concert is rain or shine. The Annual Freedom Fest State Fair in Allentown will be the last to celebrate the holiday with a magic show, live animals and pig racing. The fair will take place at the Horse Park of New Jersey from July 13 to 17. Tickets will be $15 at the gate, and are available at Walgreens for $10.
