On January 15, 2016, PEAC Health and Fitness, Rutgers Extension and Lawrence Intermediate School partnered to host a Caps for Cancer event.
Lawrence Intermediate School 5th Grade student Abbie Duncan gathered friends, family and classmates to sew caps for cancer patients. Moved by seeing her mother’s and grandmother’s friends going through cancer treatment, Duncan wanted to find a way to help.
Following a month long sweater drive at PEAC Health and Fitness to gather materials to sew the caps, about 25 students from Duncan’s school, along with their parents, Abbie’s mom Jackie Duncan and grandmother Betty Voss, donated their time and energy cutting, pinning and sewing 60 caps with another 30 prepped and ready to be sewn.
Caps will be distributed to cancer patients at Capital Health Hopewell and Princeton Medical Center.
Sharon Gore from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County facilitated the event. This was a zero waste project as the sleeves from the sweaters are being made into fingerless gloves by the Mercer County 4-H Sewing Club and donated to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and the sweater remnants have been taken to Hopewell Valley Central High School for their Spin Green Project.
