A coalition of gun violence prevention activists in Ewing have joined together to participate in a national Concert Across America to End Gun Violence, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 25.
The Ewing event, to be hosted by Trinity UMC, is family-friendly, free and open to the public. It will be one of over 300 concerts held across the U.S., each connected via social media and online.
Among the artists performing at the Ewing event will be Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman of Philadelphia’s legendary The Hooters, Jeffrey Gaines, York Street Hustle (sixties soul review), Ewing’s own Miche Braden, The Williamsboy, The May Darlings, Kuf Knotz and Joe Miller, Kevin John Allen, Kevin Toft, Rock and Roll Over – Acoustic KISS Tribute, Soul Custody Duo, Dan Kassel (cellist), Kedar Naphade (traditional Indian music), Sad Patrick & Bethlehem, Papa Carl and Guy DeRosa, Brian Jacobs and Craig Smith, Brian Joyce and Don Feiler, Khalid Quesada.
Local speakers include Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, serving the 12th District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“We must overcome the absolute paralysis on firearms in this nation. It’s become eerily common to see news alerts telling us about shootings in high school cafeterias, in college libraries, in office buildings and nightclubs—and the shootings that happen every day in our cities, the stray bullets that take innocent lives on street corners or in domestic disputes go uncovered altogether,” Watson Coleman said. “We’ve got to acknowledge that guns are the problem, and take bold, brave steps to end gun violence once and for all. I’m glad to see action at every level in our community with events like the Concert Across America as we join together to push for change.”
Partners and those tabling and speaking at the event include Moms Demand Action New Jersey, New Jersey Million Mom March, Tre Devon Lane Foundation, Womanspace, Gays Against Guns New Jersey, Brady Campaign – New Jersey Chapter, Ceasefire NJ Profect of CFPA and more.
During the event, Artworks Trenton will be curating an art exhibit featuring art submitted by local talent centered around the themes of anti-violence and anti-gun violence.
PopUp Anthology is also hosting a film festival to screen independent films around the subject including 91%: A Film About Guns In America.
There will also be an assortment of food trucks and family-friendly activities. The Mercer County Board of Elections will also be registering voters at the event.
The Ewing event is being coordinated by Eric Miller whose Candlelight Concerts for Epilepsy Awareness were featured with his partners at Trinity UMC over the past few years.
“This is not an anti-Second Ammendment event,” Miller said, “This is an event to not only honor and remember those lost to gun violence—over 33,000 last year alone—but a unique opportunity to raise your voice in unison with tens of thousands of others around the country to say enough is enough. It’s an opportunity to join with others, to enjoy a nice day of music, art and community and to speak out in favor of common sense changes in the hopes of preventing tomorrow’s victims.”
The event will begin at noon and run until approximately 8 p.m. Trinity UMC is located at 1985 Pennington Road in Ewing, directly across from The College of New Jersey. For updates and artist schedule, visit the Facebook event page.
