Edward J. DeAngelo, 55, of Ewing died on Aug. 19, at home after a long battle with ALS.
Born and raised in Ewing, DeAngelo was a lifelong resident. DeAngelo was a graduate of Ewing High School, Class of 1979, and the Trenton Police Academy, Class No. 67. He also attended MCCC. He was a employee of Ewing Township for more than 31 years, serving for more than 27 years on the police department. He retired as lieutenant.
DeAngelo was a range master and armorer as well as an instructor in the Mercer County and Burlington County police academies. He was the community officer for the Ewing Police Department in charge of special events, including National Night Out, and liaison to The College of New Jersey and Rider University.
DeAngelo was president of the Superior Officers Association for many years. The recipient of the Trenton Elks Lodge 105 Police Officer of the Year Award in 1990, DeAngelo was further distinguished by receiving the Ewing PBA 111 Police Officer of the Year Award in 1992.
Throughout his career with the police department, DeAngelo received numerous letters of commendation and acknowledgements for exemplary service.
For several years, during the introduction of WZBN’s news program, video was shown of DeAngelo and the SWAT team apprehending a suspect while on the roof of a local apartment building.
His community activities included coaching Ewing Girls Soccer as well as Ewing Little League and Babe Ruth teams. DeAngelo was a member of the West Trenton Italian-American Club and the Ewing Athletic Club. An avid golfer, he belonged to several golf groups at Mountainview Golf Course.
DeAngelo loved to be outdoors with family and friends, and enjoyed summers in Long Beach Island at the Devlin compound. Since his diagnosis four years ago, fundraising efforts in his name have raised more than $110,000 for ALS research.
Son of the late Anthony and Catherine Lavelle DeAngelo, DeAngelo is survived by his wife of 30 years, Susan Shelly DeAngelo; his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa DeAngelo DiStefano and Andrew J. DiStefano of Ewing; his son, Christopher E. DeAngelo of Ewing, and many extended family and friends.
