A Valentine’s Day event will raise funds for the restoration of the The 1867 Sanctuary at Ewing.

Two events in town during the month of February are focused historical themes.

First up, the Ewing Township Historic Preservation Society is set to present a program titled, “Elias Boudinot, Forgotten American Patriot.”

The public is invited to attend a talk hosted by the Historic Society on Boudinot, a New Jersey patriot of the American Revolution.

The talk will be presented by Ewing resident John Maloney at the Benjamin Temple House on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Boudinot was a delegate to the Continental Congress, and later a representative from New Jersey to the House of Representatives.

A lawyer with a practice in Elizabethtown, he was a long-time member of the board of trustees of Princeton College.

As president of the Continental Congress in 1782 and 1783, he signed the Treaty of Paris with England, ending the war and British occupation of the former colonies.

He went on to serve as director of the U.S. Mint, and was the first president of the American Bible Society. He was the brother-in-law of Richard Stockton of Morven in Princeton, and had many ties to central New Jersey.

Maloney also has many ties to the central Jersey area. He is a graduate of Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), where he majored in history. He then went on to earn a master’s in education from Temple University, and a Juris Doctorate from Rutgers-Camden School of Law.

He taught as an adjunct professor for seven years at The College of New Jersey, and previously worked as a research assistant to the historian for the City of Burlington. He currently practices criminal defense law.

The c.1740 Benjamin Temple House, home of the Ewing Township Historic Preservation Society, is located at 27 Federal City Road in Ewing. The talk will be free to members of the Society, while a small donation is suggested for non-members.

The second event comes just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Share an evening with your loved one while also demonstrating your love and support for a community landmark.

Preservation New Jersey is hosting “Heart and Soul: A Valentine’s Evening Delight” on Feb. 14, to benefit the restoration and reuse of the 1867 Sanctuary on Scotch Road (formerly the Ewing Presbyterian Church).

The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with appetizers and a variety of beverages. Dinner, catered by Freddie’s of West Trenton, will be served at 7 p.m., while live piano music is provided by chamber musician, pianist and piano instructor Marianne Lauffer.

The TEMPOraries, a local 10-piece rock and R&B band, will provide music for dancing or listening with your favorite Valentine — or your best friends, from 8 to 10 p.m. A dessert buffet, featuring treats donated by local bakeries, will offer sweets.

The cost of the benefit dinner is $50 per person, and provides not only a delightful evening, but also supports the restoration of the 1867 Sanctuary at Ewing and its eventual re-use as a community arts center.

A portion of the cost will be tax deductible. Tables of six to eight people can be reserved for groups. Reservations can be made by visiting the website at 1867Sanctuary.org, or by emailing the coordinating team at 1867sanctuary@prervationnj.org, or by calling Bob at 908-295-7739.
