The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure today reopened the bridge carrying Carlton Avenue over the West Branch of Shabakunk Creek in Ewing Township on May 23.
Officially known as Bridge No. 441.6 on Carlton Avenue, the structure is located between Lower Ferry and Scotch roads. The original bridge, built in 1955, was deemed structurally deficient.
The new structure supports two 11-foot-wide travel lanes, two shoulders and a concrete sidewalk on the downstream side of the culvert.
The replacement structure is a three-sided precast concrete culvert on cast-in-place concrete footings. The culvert clear span is 22 feet and the overall length is 24 feet.
The project construction duration was 90 calendar days but was completed 24 days ahead of schedule
The Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders approved the award of bid to the Konkus Corp. on Jan. 8, 2013. The cost of the project is $522,593.39 and was funded through the New Jersey Department of Transportation Division of Local Aid funds.
