Where to find free tax assistance in Mercer County

Many sites throughout Mercer County are offering free income tax preparation assistance to help residents prepare and file their 2013 taxes.

The deadline for filing 2013 tax returns for both state and federal taxes is April 15, 2014. Below is a list of sites where free income tax preparation assistance is being provided. Service is offered from early February through mid-April unless otherwise noted.

The AARP Foundation provides Tax-Aides to assist people with low to moderate incomes with 2013 tax preparation. Eleven sites are hosting the AARP Tax-Aide program.

Ewing Branch, Mercer County Library System, 61 Scotch Road, Ewing. Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Appointments are necessary. Call (609) 882-3148 for required paperwork.

Nine Sites are offering the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $50,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities.

Rider University, 2083 Lawrence Road (Route 206), Lawrence. Feb. 12, 19 and 26 and March 5 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Feb. 15 and 22 and March 1 and 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Multi-Cultural Center on the second floor of the Bart Luedeke Center. Walk-ins welcome.

Individuals seeking assistance should bring pertinent tax documents such as W2 forms, interest statements, copies of last year’s return as well as any IRS tax item received in the mail.
