Mercer County Cooperative Extension is set to offer a four-part lawn care course.
County horticulturist Barbara J. Bromley will teach Basics of Successful Lawn Care for professionals in the lawn care industry and for homeowners who care for their own lawns or hire maintenance companies.
The course kicks off Feb. 5 with Management Strategies and Selection of Grasses. Bromley will cover determining lawn maintenance levels, characteristics of cool and warm season grasses grown in New Jersey, soil testing, and understanding the basic grass requirements of light, water, and soil.
Part two is dedicated to Maintenance. Topics include mowing, edging, soil testing, fertilizing, liming and watering.
The next part is Pest Control; Bromley will discuss the identification and control of insects, weeds and diseases.
The course ends with Troubleshooting and Lawn Renovation and Establishment. The presentation includes how to identify some common problems, renovate a damaged lawn and establish a new lawn on bare soil by seeding or sodding.
Classes are scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26. The charge is $12 per class of $40 for all four to cover the cost of printed handouts. Classes will be held at the Extension office.
Pesticide re-certification credits are being offered.
