Residents at The Clare Estate, an assisted living residence, are set to host a tie-blanket marathon to benefit children’s charities in Mercer County and overseas.
The marathon is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 23 at the facility, 201 Crosswicks St., Bordentown.
The residents of Anthony’s Walk Memory Care Unit, located within The Clare Estate, plan to use their crafting skills to make a difference in the lives of children.
Blankets fashioned during the marathon will be made in various sizes and designs and donated to HomeFront, a Lawrenceville, N.J.-based organization, as well as children’s charities in Liberia and Haiti.
Last fall, the residents made the first set of 18 blankets and delivered them to newborns serviced by HomeFront’s Family Preservation Center in Trenton.
Each blanket has a hand-stitched fleece heart with a number inside that represents the residents’ motto of “every heart counts.” The number signifies the chronological order in which the blankets are created.
In March, The Clare Estate hosted its first Tie-Blanket Marathon, during which local scout troops and volunteers worked with seniors to complete 18 more blankets in one day, bringing the total to 36. The initiative, which has grown from a therapeutic activity to an outreach program, is set to continue with a marathon every quarter.
The Clare Estate, established by Community Investment Strategies, Inc. in 2001, is housed in the former St. Clare’s Monastery. The community is staffed 24 hours a day by a multi-disciplinary team and offers amenities like medication management, planned outings, chef prepared meals and on-site physician services.
