Bordentown Township has been awarded a Sustainable Jersey Capacity-Building Grant. The $2,000 grant is intended to assist community green teams as they lead and coordinate the sustainability activities of their community.
The Sustainable Jersey Small Grants Program funded by the PSE&G Foundation is providing $200,000 in grants to local governments for sustainability projects. Since 2009, Sustainable Jersey has distributed more than $1.7 million in grants to New Jersey municipalities to help towns make their communities more livable, environmentally friendly and prosperous.
“Bordentown Township would like to thank Sustainable Jersey and PSE&G for their generous award to our community and supporting our initiatives,” Deputy Mayor Jill Popko said.
The grant will enable Bordentown Township’s Green Team to initiate a film night program that will enhance an ongoing education and outreach Sustainable Jersey action. Movies in the Park will kick off the season, followed by periodic film nights at local venues. All the films chosen are set to be fun, interesting and informative with an emphasis geared toward different age groups and audiences.
The recipients of the grants have proposed projects that provide sustainable solutions to everyday challenges. Food waste recycling in schools, a green business recognition program, a water conservation and reuse program, woodlands restoration, a creative assets inventory and more have been added to the list of initiatives that the Sustainable Jersey Small Grants program is funding.
“Environmental, social and economic issues are the cornerstone to the PSE&G Foundation’s support and we are committed to leading the communities in which we serve towards a more sustainable future,” Ellen Lambert, president of the PSEG Foundation, said.
A core element of the Sustainable Jersey program is to provide funding and resources to municipalities to help them make progress. Currently, 75 percent of the state’s municipalities participating (423 towns across all 21 counties) have registered to become Sustainable Jersey certified.
Sustainable Jersey is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability programs.
