Every Halloween, Bordentown Regional High School thespians go door to door in their local neighborhoods to “trick-or-treat” for canned goods (and other non-perishables) instead of candy. In just a few days, the food is organized, weighed and donated to local food pantries where it can be distributed to those who really need it. The project, organized by BRHS’s International Thespian Society Troupe 6803, is called Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat and has helped a lot of people over the years. Last Halloween, students collected a whopping 4,760 pounds of food, which was donated to St. Mary’s Food Pantry in Bordentown City. This Halloween, the goal is 5,000 pounds. The food will be collected from nine Bordentown area neighborhoods, including Bordentown City, the Charles Bossert Estates, the Georgetown Estates, Holloway Meadows, Crystal Lake, Meadow Run, Clifton Mill and Fieldsboro. The food will be donated to two pantries in Bordentown City: St. Mary’s and First Baptist Church. Reaching 5,000 pounds is not at all a long shot, but it will require work, and, most importantly, participation from you, the Bordentown area residents. We are asking that residents set aside any non-perishable food that can be spared, whether it is something from your own house or something extra from the store. It’s all going to people in your community who need it. If for some reason you are not able donate on Halloween night, you still have many other opportunities. Orange collection boxes are being placed in the lobbies of all Bordentown Regional School District schools, including Bordentown Regional High School, Bordentown Regional Middle School, MacFarland Intermediate School, Clara Barton Elementary School, and Peter Muschal Elementary School. Boxes will also be placed on Farnsworth Avenue on the day of the Halloween Parade in Bordentown City.Anyone attending the parade is encouraged, if they are able, to bring a can or two which can be put into one of these boxes or given directly to the BRHS thespians, who will be using their float to collect more food. If you have any questions/concerns about the project, or if you would simply like to follow its progress, be sure to follow Btown Thespians on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Otherwise, thanks for helping us “Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat,” because “Hunger is a SCARY thing.”Evan BraaschBraasch is a member of BRHS’s International Thespian Society Troupe 6803.
