The Borough of Fieldsboro voted to adopt a smoke-free ordinance for their parks and recreational fields on May 14.
The main goals of an outdoor smoke-free ordinance are to protect individuals from the affects of second-hand smoke and to provide good role modeling for youth.
The Burlington County Coalition for Healthy Communities and Integrated Municipal Advisory Council partnered with Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey and Mom’s Quit Connection on this initiative.
Last year, on World No Tobacco Day, May 31, all Burlington County parks went smoke-free thanks to a resolution passed by the Burlington County Freeholders.
In Burlington County, there are currently 15 municipalities that have adopted a smoke-free or tobacco free outdoor ordinance, in addition to the county resolution.
State-wide, more than 240 municipalities have adopted smoke-free or tobacco-free outdoor ordinances. There is currently a State-wide Smoke Free Parks Bill that has passed through the NJ Assembly and is waiting to be posted in the N.J. Senate.
