What is hormone therapy? And are there other ways to alleviate menopause symptoms besides that? A. During menopause, women can experience a number of symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings and vaginal dryness. These symptoms can be severe at times and have a negative impact on one’s quality of life. Hormone replacement therapy, sometimes known as “HRT,” refers to hormones like estrogen, progesterone and others that are taken regularly to stabilize and increase a menopausal woman’s hormone levels and help alleviate the symptoms of menopause.There have been some negative effects associated with hormone replacement therapy, especially for women who take them for a long period of time. These may include an increased risk of breast cancer, stroke and blood clots. If you are considering hormone replacement therapy, you should talk to your doctor to see if you are a good candidate and what method of hormone therapy (pills, patches, creams, etc.) makes the most sense for you.
