Visitors to Small World Coffee will get to see another side of their baristas in December, as they host a takeover of the monthly art show.
Through Tuesday, January 7, every piece of art on the walls at both the Nassau and Witherspoon cafés is from a current or former employee of Small World.
An art show opening party takes place Friday, December 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Witherspoon Street cafe.
“We’ve had such incredibly talented, creative people working here at Small World, starting from the very beginning,” says Jessica Durrie, owner and founder of the Princeton cafe. “I’m thrilled that visitors will get a chance to see a little bit more of how cool our Worldlings are.”
According to Small World Coffee’s general manager Vin Jule, about 20 current and former employees — known as Worldlings — submitted pieces for display, ranging from paintings to collages to fiber art, and more.
“The great thing about displaying so many different artists at once is that there’s something for everyone,” Jule says. “Pop culture, sports, landscapes, tattoo illustrations, tip jar art; you name it, we’ve got it. It’s all really eclectic and fun.”
“Eclectic and fun” is a part of Small World’s DNA, as is supporting the arts. “We’ve had a monthly art show featuring different artists every month since we opened in 1993,” Durrie says. “It’s a part of our mission that I’ve always felt strongly about. Using the café to highlight local artists and musicians, and to bring our community together — I feel lucky I’ve been able to do that for so many years.”
