Officials are urging eligible senior homeowners to apply for Stay NJ, a new state program that offers substantial property tax relief for older residents.
The Stay NJ program provides a 50% reimbursement on property taxes—up to $13,000 annually—with a maximum of $6,500 for the 2024 tax year.
Homeowners ages 65 or older who meet income and residency requirements are eligible. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31, 2025, with payments expected in early 2026.
To help spread the word and assist with applications, the Middlesex County has launched a public awareness campaign that includes digital resources, support services, and a dedicated webpage at middlesexcountynj.gov/taxrelief.
Residents of Plainsboro, which is located in Middlesex can take advantage of the support offered by the county. Residents of towns in other counties can find information about th eprogram on the state website at nj.gov/treasury/taxation/staynj/index.shtml.
“The Stay NJ program will provide meaningful relief to our senior homeowners, helping them remain in the homes they have built and cherished within their community in Middlesex County,” said County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios.
He added: “We know many older residents are facing growing financial pressures, and we urge all who are eligible to take advantage of this opportunity.”
Eligible residents can apply for Stay NJ, the ANCHOR property tax benefit, and the Senior Freeze program using a single application this year.
“Middlesex County is here to assist residents as they apply for the Stay NJ program by making the process more accessible through online tools on our County website,” said County Clerk Nancy J. Pinkin.
The county has made two digital tools available to assist with the process: the Tax Relief Program Address Lookup and the Clerk Records Search Tool, both available on the tax relief website.
These tools help applicants locate key property information, including block and lot numbers.
In addition to digital tools, the Office of Aging & Disabled Services will conduct outreach across the county to ensure residents are informed about the program and receive help applying.
As an AARP-designated Age-Friendly Community, Middlesex County provides a range of services for older adults, including nutrition programs, fitness and health events, fraud prevention workshops, and community engagement opportunities.
