Steinert High School Junior Allyson Lopez-Hernandez will be attending the Harvard Secondary School Summer Program Residential beginning in June.
Lopez-Hernandez is a lifelong Hamilton Township resident who has attended Greenwood Elementary, Mercerville Elementary and Reynolds Middle School.
Lopez-Hernandez is a member of Key Club at Steinert. She also works with her mom at a local warehouse after school.
“My favorite subject is math. However this year, I am really enjoying ELA (English Language Arts). The stories we are reading are interesting and have inspired me to read more. We just finished The Great Gatsby and it was amazing,” she said.
Lopez-Hernandez found out about Harvard’s Summer Program through social media and YouTube.
“I kept seeing ads everywhere and thought, ‘This is a long shot, but I went for it. The application process was arduous and I had to write five essays, but the outcome was worth the hard work,” she said.
The seven-week program offers students an opportunity to take two summer courses, meet students from all over the world, and live in Harvard dorms on campus.
Lopez-Hernandez plans to take the Law in War and Entrepreneurship From The Perspective of Business, and Intellectual Property Law courses at Harvard. She will begin exploring colleges in the fall with a law degree in mind.
Scott Rocco, the Hamilton Township School District superintendent, congratulated Lopez-Hernandez on being accepted into the program. “I have no doubt that she will excel this summer at Harvard University,” he said.
