Mercer County has reopened a key bi-county crossing over the Millstone River, restoring a direct link between Plainsboro and West Windsor after months of construction.
The newly constructed bridge linking Millstone Road in West Windsor and Grover’s Mill Road in Plainsboro officially opened Dec. 15.
The structure spans the Millstone River and replaces a bridge originally built in 1967 that had been deemed structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. The new crossing is officially designated as Mercer County Bridge No. 760.4 and Middlesex County Bridge No. 4-B-92.
It is a single-span multi-beam bridge supported by a precast reinforced concrete pile cap founded on steel piles, with a prefabricated composite concrete deck set on steel girders.
The former bridge was closed to traffic in July to allow construction to begin. Midatlantic Construction LLC of Barnegat Township was awarded the project through a competitive bidding process.
County officials said the work was substantially completed in 154 days, aided by advanced construction methods including precast segments and ultra-high-strength concrete closure pours.
The bridge meets all state Department of Transportation standards and includes new sidewalks, open bridge railings and guide rails at the leading corners.
Roadways on both approaches have been repaved, restriped and upgraded with additional sidewalk improvements.
“I’m proud that we were able to complete this work quickly, replacing an outdated structure with a safe bridge that will stand for many decades to come,” Mercer County Executive Dan Benson said.
“I want to thank Middlesex County for collaborating with us on this project and on other shared bridges, so that residents and travelers can continue to move safely and easily between our counties,” he said.
