The Nassau Inn in Princeton has been inducted into Historic Hotels of America—the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The program recognizes and promotes hotels across the United States that have maintained their historic integrity, architecture and ambiance. It includes more than 300 hotels nationwide.

Originally established in 1756 and relocated to its current site on Palmer Square in 1937, the Nassau Inn has part of Princeton’s history for more than two centuries. The inn’s induction into Historic Hotels of America highlights its significance and dedication to preserving its heritage.

According to a news release, the program acknowledges properties that have been designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, or are listed or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

“Historic Hotels of America is delighted to induct Nassau Inn, a colonial hotel,” said Lawrence Horwitz, executive vice president of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide, in a statement.

“We commend Nassau Inn, Palmer Square, and leadership team for their careful historic preservation work, stewardship and vision that will allow future generations of travelers to experience this unique historic destination,” said Horwitz.

“It is both an honor and a privilege to be entrusted to carry on the legacy of our predecessors,” said Lori Rabon, vice president Nassau Inn and Palmer Square. “The Nassau Inn is rich in history and architectural integrity.”

Nassau Inn’s history dates back to the 18th century when it was first known as the College Inn. It played a central role in the social and political life of early Princeton.

Prominent figures such as Paul Revere, Thomas Paine and Robert Morris frequented the inn, which also hosted the Committee of Safety in 1775. The inn served as a gathering place for local residents and students of Princeton University who came to discuss current events and political developments over food and drink.

Throughout the Revolutionary War, the inn hosted officers of both the Continental Army and British forces, depending on which side held control of the town. It became a key site for meetings and celebrations, including festivities following the Battle of Yorktown and the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

During the summer of 1783, when the Continental Congress convened in Princeton, the inn hosted national leaders and provided accommodations just steps from the historic sessions in nearby Nassau Hall.

By 1937, the Nassau Inn relocated to Palmer Square to accommodate modern demands. The new building incorporated materials and artifacts from the original structure, including a stone platform seat used to support wine casks in the old inn’s cellar and historic weapons displayed in the lobby, such as a Hessian sword and a musket from the Battle of Princeton.

Today, the inn’s centerpiece is the Yankee Doodle Tap Room, which features a 13-foot mural painted by Norman Rockwell in 1937. The mural humorously depicts the legend of Yankee Doodle, surrounded by other historical symbols. Rockwell also created the Yankee Doodle sign that adorns the entrance.

The Tap Room is known for its deep connection to Princeton’s history. The carved initials of notable visitors, including Albert Einstein, can still be seen in the room’s solid oak tables.

“We are honored and privileged to carry on the legacy of our predecessors,” said Lori Rabon, vice president of Nassau Inn and Palmer Square. “The Nassau Inn is rich in history and architectural integrity, and we strive to maintain its traditions while serving as a welcoming destination for travelers.”
