A co-worker of Carolyn Byington, the woman who was killed in her Hunters Glen apartment on June 10, has been charged with her murder.

Kenneth C. Saal, 30, of Lindenwold, in Camden County, was arrested yesterday and charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of third degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, said Plainsboro Police Chief Fred Tavener and Middlesex Prosecutor Andrew Carey.

The charges were filed as the result of a joint investigation by the Plainsboro Police and the Prosecutor’s Office.

Saal was apprehended at his residence by officers from the prosecutor’s office and the Plainsboro Police Department, with the assistance of the Lindenwold Police Department and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office-Homicide Unit.

Authorities have yet to release any details of the crime, including the manner of Byington’s death.

Byington’s body was discovered inside her Hunters Glen apartment by police at 6 p.m. on June 10. Officers had been dispatched to Byington’s apartment following a request by her coworkers to conduct a wellness check. Byington and Saal both worked at Engine, a marketing and advertising company in Carnegie Center in West Windsor.

Byington’s coworkers had become concerned after she left for her lunch break and never returned. Her death was ruled to be a homicide later that evening following an autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A number of news outlets have reported that neighbors reported hearing faint screams coming from the apartment on the day she was killed, along with what sounded like furniture moving. They said they didn’t see anyone leave, and no one called police to report what they heard. It is believed that she was attacked once she entered her apartment.

Byington was a graduate of Ridge High School in Basking Ridge and earned a bachelor’s degree in international affairs/anthropology and sociology (double major) from Lafayette College. She also studied in Japan. She worked as a senior associate in project management at Engine.

“I sincerely thank and commend the many dedicated members of law enforcement who have worked tirelessly to solve this homicide and apprehend the defendant. The investigation has been a top priority since the crime occurred,” said Carey in a news release. “I hope that the arrest brings at least some sense of peace to the friends and family of Carolyn, as well as the greater community.”

The investigation is still ongoing, and anyone with information on the crime is asked to call call Plainsboro Det. Tim McMahon at (609) 799-2333 ext. 1627, or Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Det. David Abromaitis at (732) 745-4436.
