Democrats unopposed
Barring the appearing of successful write-in candidates, Ewing Mayor Bert Steinmann and council members Sarah Steward and Kathleen Wollert will be running unopposed in the November elections.
All three will be appearing as the only Democrats on the municipal ballot in Primary Election on Tuesday, June 5. In addition, no Republicans have filed to run for election against Steinmann and his running mates.
Up for election this year are the mayor’s four-year term and two four-year seats on township council.
New firefighters hired
Ewing recently hired 13 new career firefighters who will be stationed to operate out of the township’s 24/7 career fire department operating out of the Pennington Road Fire Co. building on Pennington Road.
The new hires will be funded in part by a federal grant that was awarded to the township earlier this year.
The township had already budgeted for seven firefighters, and the SAFER $971,469 will fund the other six, said Mayor Bert Steinmann. The grant is from a Federal Emergency Management Agency program to hire or retain firefighters.
The new firefighters are Chris Aldridge, Michele Anderson, Jason Carty, Rian Donoher, Thomas Johnson, Brandon Leese, Michael Nelson, Toriano Perry, Shaun Poland, Chris Steinmetz, John Tomasulo, Shawn Vallauri, James Wintermute and Richard Wesner.
Hollowbrook reopens
The grand reopening of the Hollowbrook Community Center and Pool Complex was set to be celebrated during a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 31, after the Observer’s press time.
The center closed 2016 for asbestos remediation and renovations. Improvements include a new roof on the entire building and an addition.
A new entrance has been constructed where the old atrium stood. The building has been updated with new HVAC systems and boiler, new windows, LED lighting, new emergency lights, new flooring, updated fire and burglar alarm systems and new interior and exterior doors.
There is also a new ramp by the library and new emergency steps from the computer lab. Updates to existing bathrooms are part of the renovation and a new ADA compliant bathroom was installed on the first floor. Both kitchens in the community room have been redone with new appliances and fixtures.
The improvements also feature a new main pool with a splash park.
Class of 1988 to celebrate 30th reunion
The Ewing High School Class of 1988 will be celebrating its 30th reunion on July 14, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Nassau Inn in Princeton.
All Class of 1988 graduates and their guests are invited to gather for night of “Jersey Shore” food, great music and reconnecting with classmates. The cost of the event is $60 per person.
The reunion planners are also looking to track down e-mails addresses for a number of classmates.
Any Class of 1988 graduate who has not received communications about the reunion, is being asked to contact Brian Hughes at bchughes2@verizon.net and provide him with an email address to be added to the distribution list.
