State-honored educators recognized
During the Bordentown Regional School District Board of Education meeting on June 13, the 2017-2018 governor’s teachers and educational specialists of the year were recognized by the board and the district. At the high school, Michelle Quigley (TOY) and Diana McNeil (ESOY) were honored. Christopher O’Leary (TOY) and Terence Degnon (ESOY) were the middle school’s honorees. Julie McCall (TOY) and Michael Priano (ESOY) were MacFarland’s winners, and Emily Cain (TOY) and Courtney Finn (ESOY) are Clara Barton’s honorees. Peter Muschal’s honorees were Lori Monaghan (TOY) and Chelsea Kehr (ESOY).
High school students place at finance competition
The fourth annual Money$peak competition was held May 23 at Rider University’s Bart Luedeke Center. Participating student teams came from Bordentown Regional, Colts Neck, Hopewell Valley, Jackson Liberty, Lawrence, Montgomery, New Egypt, Rancocas Valley Regional, Seneca, Steinert and West Windsor-Plainsboro North high schools. Team Scotties—Thomas Hendrickson and Jaspreet Singh, advised by teacher Kara Lynch— presented on career and earnings. They came in second place and won a $1,000 team award, plus a $750 school grant for personal finance education.
To make it to the regional Money$peak competition, the student teams first competed in their home high schools. In total, nearly 80 teams, representing over 400 students, competed this spring, before the final 10 teams were selected to represent their districts and meet at Money$peak.
Students were challenged to create a short, three-to-five-minute, original presentation on a specific topic from the required high school personal finance course and present it to a panel of high-profile judges from the finance profession. Teams of two-to-six students used the important information learned in the classroom to create slideshows, videos and songs to creatively express their personal finance lessons to the judges and audience.
