This spring, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society held its annual Student of the Year campaign. The Student of the Year campaign is a seven-week initiative in which students at various high schools participate in a fundraising competition to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s New Jersey Chapter.
Hopewell Valley Central High School has participated in this campaign for the last three years. Two years ago, HVCHS student Julia Immordino was the competition winner, and last year the team of Jack Demareski, Max Brass and Ali Schragger won the competition.
Although HVCHS did not win this year they still raised a significant amount of money to help fight the battle against blood cancers. Michelle Evetts, LLS Student of the Year campaign director, was at the high school in March to present a ceremonial check in the amount of $125,353.28, which represents the amount of money that the Hopewell High School kids have raised in the last three years for this competition.
Other students that participated include Claire King, Brandon Li, Avaneesh Kolluri, Quetzal Baum, Ava Salmon, Sangam Shivaprasad, Paige Taylor and Sofia Guerino. All are active members of Student Movement Against Cancer club at the high school.
“On behalf of the New Jersey Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and blood cancer patients everywhere, I want to recognize theses students for their incredible efforts and also thank their families, friends and the entire Hopewell Valley community for their support of this great cause over the last few years,” said Mike Shevlin, board chair of the New Jersey chapter.
The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
