The Trenton Artist Workshop Association and the Trenton Free Public Library present the exhibition “Walls on Walls,” opening with a reception on Thursday, February 23, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and continuing through Friday, April 7.
“Walls on Walls” features new work inspired by street art: a contemporary and generally urban style rooted in nonconformity and marked by bold images and actual words. The exhibit celebrates how this new and non-permanent art style — one affected by natural elements — is having a lasting influence on the world of art.
The seven participating artists reflect various artistic approaches, ranging from the traditional to the cutting edge. Priscilla Algava of Princeton creates statements by using lettering in bold colors. Aubrey J. Kauffman of Ewing captures street images through photographs of urban landscapes. West Windsor artist Andrew Werth uses bold patterns to an illusion of movement.
Nationally known Trenton-based artist Mel Leipzig depicts street artists in front of their work. Florence Moonan of Lambertville creates images in actual wall textures. And Leon Rainbow of Trenton and Dean Innocenzi of Hamilton are active street artists who work directly exterior walls. TAWA president and visual artist Liz Aubrey (wife of Downtowner editor Dan Aubrey) created and curated the project.
The Trenton Artists Workshop was founded in 1979 and has been exhibited at the New Jersey State Museum, Trenton City Museum, Artworks, Prince Street Gallery in New York City, and elsewhere; produced the ground breaking Eyes on Trenton festival; created an artist exchange with the Soviet Union; and launched several important city arts initiatives and programs in the capital city.
