#b#Biking for a Cause: ALS Research#/b#

Princeton Junction resident Andrew Foster will support ALS research by cycling 270 miles over three days in the 14th Annual Tri-State Trek, an event to raise awareness and money for ALS research, from Friday to Sunday, June 24 to 26.

Foster, as well as other cyclists participating in the Tri-State Trek, will make their journeys from Newton, Massachusetts, to Greenwich, Connecticut.

Foster, a devoted cyclist, couldn’t find a better way to raise money for research on ALS — the fatal neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease — than by doing what he loves.

“I am an avid cyclist. My friend’s brother-in-law suffers from ALS, so I thought it would be helpful to raise money while having the opportunity to enjoy riding in an area of the country with which I am unfamiliar,” Foster said.

Foster, a father of four, is an associate professor of classics and his wife, Kathryn Kueny, is a professor of Islamic studies at Fordham University.

After having arthroscopic knee surgery for the second time, he was advised to find a way to be active other than running, which led him to cycling in 2008. In 2009 he joined the Princeton Freewheelers with which he went on group rides and enjoyed the exercise and exploring New Jersey.

Strong Chemistry

Shannon Weng, a rising junior at High School South, has established herself as one of the top 20 high school chemistry students in the country.

After a series of exams administered to more than 16,000 students, Weng is among the select group under consideration for one of four spots on the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Team. Those top 20 students are currently participating in an intensive study camp at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia. The four students and two alternates selected for the team will compete in Tblisi, Georgia, later this summer against teams from more than 70 other countries.

A team from High School North received an honorable mention in the second annual Money$peak competition, hosted by the Mercadien Foundation and Rider University on June 1.

The competition began with 60 teams from area high schools and ended with six teams selected for the final through in-school competitions. Teams of two to four students created a short, innovative presentation on a topic in personal finance for a panel of judges.

Team members from North included Dan Grueneberg, Humayd Humayun, Usamah Zaki, and Shivam Raval. Their presentation on identity theft, “Left For Theft,” earned the team a $250 award as well as a $250 grant for personal finance education at North. Their advisor was Albert Paulsson.

#b#Eagle Scout#/b#

Jonathan Logan, a member of Boy Scout Troop 168 in Plainsboro, earned his Eagle Award, Boy Scouting’s highest honor, on May 2, and was recognized at a June 4 ceremony.

For his community service project he led his troop in the construction of the window wall prop and deck for the Princeton Junction Volunteer Fire Company to allow firefighters to practice entry and exit techniques. In combination with the “Denver attachment” — completed by another Eagle Scout, firefighters can practice extractions from a tight, confined space at adjustable window heights.

Logan, a West Windsor resident and rising senior at High School North, earned 23 merit badges during his time as a Boy Scout and served in various leadership roles with his troop. His parents are Dan and Rose Logan.
