Mercer County 2016 election results

U.S. Congress

The incumbents retrained their seats in the United States House of Representatives. Republican Congressman Chris Smith defeated Democratic challenger Lorna Phillipson for the New Jersey 4th Congressional District’s seat in Washington. In the 14th Congressional District, Democratic Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman defeated Steven J. Uccio.

County Surrogate

Democratic incumbent Diane Gerofsky defeated Robbinsville resident David Boyne for a five-year term as Mercer County surrogate.

County Freeholder

Democrats Andrew Koontz and Anthony Verrelli were elected to the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders, defeating Republicans Andrew Curcio and Jason Lee DeFrancesco. They will both serve three-year terms.

Ewing Council

Democratic incumbentsKevin Baxter, Jennifer Keyes-Maloney and David Schroth were elected to serve four-year terms on the Ewing Township Council. They each received roughly 24 percent of the vote to defeat Republican challengers James Ambrose, Christopher Haase and George Steward, who each received roughly 9 percent.

Ewing Board of Education

Incumbents Bruce White and Stephanie Staub were re-elected to the Ewing school board. Kenneth Bradley, who served on the school board from 2003 to 2015, was also elected to the board. All three board members will serve three-year terms. They defeated incumbent Scott Franks and challenger Channing Conway.

White is a native of Ewing who has served for more than 30 years on the school board. Staub is a Ewing native who works as the director of marketing at the Architectural Glass Institute. Bradley is a retired New Jersey senior corrections officer, who worked for the Department of Corrections for 27 years. Hamilton Board of Education

Jessica Young is the only new face on the Hamilton school board, joining incumbents Anthony Celentano and Pamela Kelly who were re-elected last night. They defeated incumbent Dina Thornton and challengers Girard Casale and John Kroschwitz for three-year terms.

Celentano, a retired project manager and consultant for technology and business related solutions, has lived in Hamilton for 48 years. Kelly was first elected to the school board in November 2013. She is the director of human resources for the Pemberton Township school district. Young is a school counselor in the Manalapan Englishtown Regional School District.

The school board is currently searching for a new superintendent. Earlier in the year, the board proposed a $54 million referendum to address aging infrastructure and safety concerns throughout the schools.

Hopewell Township Committee

The ticket was split in Hopewell Township, with incumbent Republican John Hart and Democrat Kristin McLaughlin defeating Todd Brant (R) and Michael Ruger (D) in a close race. Hart received 26 percent of the vote, McLaughlin received 25 percent and Brant and Ruger each received 24 percent.

Hart is a farmer and the owner of Rosedale Mills Country Store, John Hart Farms and Hart Stables. McLaughlin is a stay-at-home mom, trustee at The Chapin School and co-chair of the Sustainability Committee.

Lawrence Board of Education

Patricia Evans, Michelle King and Jonathan Dauber were elected to three-year terms on Lawrence’s school board. They defeated Glenn Collins, Colette M. Dickinson and Michael J. Wilson. Michele Bowes, a social worker at St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center, was elected to a one-year unexpired term. She ran unopposed.

Evans works part-time for Silver Century Foundation, a Lawrence non-profit with a focus on informed aging. King is an adjunct professor at The College of New Jersey. Dauber is the principal at West Windsor High School North. Learn about what they hope to accomplish as a board member here.

Robbinsville Board of Education, open space tax

Robbinsville residents voted in favor of the township’s open space tax increase of 1.5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. 4,209 residents voting in favor of the increase while 2,313 voted against it.

Township officials, including Mayor Dave Fried, campaigned to approve the measure so the township can preserve two parcels of land. The average home in Robbinsville—$365,000—will see an increase of $55 per year.

Jane Luciano and incumbents Matthew O’Grady and Thomas Halm, Jr. were elected a three-year term on Robbinsville’s school board. Noushin Kanani and incumbent Keith Kochberg were defeated. West Windsor-Plainsboro Board of Education

Ten candidates were running for three open seats in what became a historic election for the WW-P school board. In West Windsor, Carol Herts and Louisa Ho defeated four candidates—Scott Powell, Mirna White, Deborah Marinsky and Richard Kaye—for a seat on the WW-P school board.

In Plainsboro, incumbent Yu “Taylor” Zhong defeated Shrenik Dagli, Todd Hochman and Russell Melville for a three-year term on the WW-P school board.
