Grover’s Mill Coffee House open mic has been active since January, 2009. Anker, a musician from Cranbury who has been performing there since 2011, became the host in September after the former host, CJ Barna, moved out of state. “One of the best things about GMCH is co-owner, Franc Gambatese,” says Anker. “He is a huge support of us local musicians and participates as a performer himself. And he roasts coffee, what a guy.” Open mic takes place every Thursday at 7 p.m. Sign up in person at 6:45 p.m.
“Although singers and poets are the norm, it is an open mic so anything could happen,” says Anker. “Most nights each act gets about two or three songs or 10 to 15 minutes. This really depends on the size of our sign up list. Over the years we have had the usual solo acoustic acts, a capella singers, instrumentalists, small acoustic bands, poets, story tellers, and beat boxers.” Actors, dancers, and performance artists are also welcome.
Stand-up comedians are not welcome due to the family audiences. A separate comedy night, hosted by Helene Angley of West Windsor, is held once a month.
Anker releases his new album this month. The CD release party for his new CD, “Atomic Sound,” is on Friday, January 29, at Trenton Social. $15 includes performances by Anker and Brandon Broderick and a copy of the CD. Visit ankermusic.com for information and reservation.
“I know some of you are on the fence about performing,” says Anker. “Grover’s Mill is the supportive amazing place to start and try it out. Grover’s nurtured me through three CDs and helped me build a large musical family. This is definitely the best place for you to start.”
