How can Ewing get a consolidated ZIP code?

In every edition of the Ewing Observer, Mayor Bert Steinmann answers readers’ questions.

I live in the Jefferson condo complex however have a ZIP code of 08618, which I believe is considered Trenton. Meanwhile the Marriott on nearby Charles Ewing Boulevard has a ZIP code of 08628.

Additionally, further down the road The College of New Jersey has the 08628 ZIP code. Is there any way the ZIP code for the Jefferson complex can be changed to 08628?

This has down stream affects on other things such as increased car insurance since Trenton’s zip code is considered higher risk.

I have met with our Congressional Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, to discuss this.

I have also sent a letter to the U.S. Postal Service’s district manger as recommended by our congresswoman.

She has also reached out to them, and they indicated that when they review the request they only consider whether the review will improve the delivery of the mail. They do not consider insurance rates, as that is the responsibility of the state Department of Banking and Insurance. The district manager has 60 days to respond to our request.

I wanted to make a suggestion regarding the question in the January 2016 issue of the Observer regarding installation of a traffic light at Bull Run and Federal City Roads. Instead of installing another traffic light (especially since there already is a light at Bull Run and Pennington roads), why not make Bull Run Road one way, with access from only Pennington Road?

At the intersection at Federal City, install a berm that forces traffic to only make a right hand turn. Another alternative is to make Bull Run Road one way from the short eastern section between Lopatcong Drive and Federal City Road, which prevents traffic from turning onto the street from Federal City and the berm preventing left hand turns onto Federal City. Is either alternative possible?

The Township has taken a look at suggestions like the ones that you have made. This included input from the state, as well, due to the fact that Route 31 is a state road.

The result from many studies was to have the state install the light at Route 31 based on the projected development of the area and the traffic this development has generated.

Changing the direction of the road would also require support from Hopewell Township as the road is divided between the two towns as well as Lawrence Township, figuring in right at the top of Bull Run Road.

I did have a discussion with our engineer recently as you have noted, and we still believe that a light at Bull Run Road and Federal City Road makes sense.

If you have a question for the mayor for next month’s edition, submit it by emailing bsanservino@mercerspace.com or by going to mercerspace.com and searching for “Ask the Mayor.” You must be a Ewing resident.
