For Young Musicians

VOICES invites applications for its Young Composers Project. Children ages five through 12 are invited to compose a song for a soloist or chorus, either unaccompanied, or with instrumental accompaniment. The music can be written down in any kind of notation, formal or invented. Children are asked to make a simple recording of the piece. Students from the College of New Jersey will set the songs in standard music notation.

Parents, piano teachers, and music teachers are invited to support, but not edit, the child’s composition. Music teachers or parents can help children submit a recording (CD or DVD) and three written copies of the child’s music (with the child’s name and age, assisting adult’s name, phone number, address, and child’s background in music), together with a $12 processing fee. Send to VOICES Young Composers Project, Box 404, Pennington 08534. Visit www.VOICESChorale.org, E-mail drsevans@comcast.net, or call 609-291-7456 for information. Deadline is Tuesday, March 15.

The application deadline is Wednesday, April 6.

Free workshops for those seeking assistance with the application process will be conducted around the state. Workshops will be held Thursday, March 10, at 11 a.m. in Trenton; and Sunday, March 13, at 1 p.m. in New Brunswick. Contact Kim Nguyen at 609-292-4495 or kim.nguyen@sos.nj.gov.
