Veteran special educator Lauren Doherty has always been proud of her students, but when she learned that her middle schooler’s literacy achievement had earned them national attention, she had reason to beam.
The students ages 12-14, all of whom have educational disabilities, were national winners in the Read to Succeed contest. They earned the recognition for their performance in Achieve 3000, a unique online instructional program designed to improve literacy skills. The program “differentiates” instruction, so it reaches each student at his or her own reading level, and constantly challenges students to improve their skills.
“I am very proud of how hard these students worked, and was pleased to see how the program’s data feedback motivated them to work even harder throughout the year,” said Doherty.
Doherty, who has been with The Titusville Academy since 2003, is certified to teach elementary school, and holds endorsements to teach students with disabilities. In addition, she holds certifications for specialization for Grades 5-8 math, language arts, science and social studies. She is nearing completion of her supervisor certification.
School principal, Elford Rawls-Dill shares Doherty’s pride in the students’ performance.
“Here at The Titusville Academy, we believe that all students can learn — regardless of challenges they may have — given the right supports and opportunities. We have high expectations of our students and strive to give them a world-class education using digital technology to give them an added edge,” he said.
Rawls-Dill added that all teachers and classrooms at the school have embraced new technology in the classroom, and as a result, students are more fluent in online learning.
“We are proud that these students were recognized for their performance and have every reason to believe that these levels of achievement will continue,” he said.
The Titusville Academy is a New Jersey state-approved private school serving students ages five through 21 who have learning and behavioral difficulties. Students are placed by their local school district and attend at no cost to parents. To learn more, go to www.titusvilleacademy.org.
