Jalin Clendenin, Kayla Hilty, Sarina Khan, Alexandra Krohne, Maureen Lepold, Olivia Royster and Taylor Wemple have been recognized with the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest recognition for achievement in Girl Scouting for Junior Scouts in grades 4-5.
The girls are members of Girl Scout Troop 70059, of the Lawrence Ewing Trenton Service Unit. For their Bronze Award project, the girls built shelving for the Camp Mercer program run by HomeFront located at the Lawrence Community Center. The girls chose this program because they realized the shelving would benefit the program and provide a sustainable and durable storage place for camp supplies.
The girls contacted Brian Helmuth, director of the Lawrence Community Center, to move forward with their planned project and he was excited about the project from the beginning. “Any shelving would be a great addition to our camp program,” he said.
The girls next measured the space for the shelving, set a budget for the project, planned how to build the shelving units, and traveled to Home Depot to choose supplies. Before building could begin, the girls learned about tool safety and eye safety. They learned how to safely use a hammer, a power drill, a vibrating sander, a miter saw, screw drivers,and a chalk line.
In working as a unit, the girls also learned how to: rely on one another; depend on one another for support, especially when balancing and supporting plywood; communicate with one another, especially when using a power drill and miter saw; listen to one another during planning, thinking and action of the project; and to respect each other.
“We were all blown away with how wonderful the shelves look,” said Helmuth. “The design of the shelves, the painting, the size, the sturdiness was exactly what we were looking for. We can’t wait for the kids to see them when they start camp this year!”
Meanwhile, Troop 70059 also announced that Lepold, Krohne, Clendenin and Hilty have been recognized with the Journey Summit Award Pin for Junior Scouts in grades 4-5.
The Journey Summit Award Pin is earned by girls who have completed all three National Leadership Journeys at their grade level. In earning the Journey Summit Award Pin, the girls participated in the planning, organizing, reporting, and action steps in each journey.
