The Tulpehaking Nature Center is set to host an open house celebration of its first birthday on Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Tulpehaking Nature Center is located at 157 Westcott Ave. in Hamilton.
One year ago, the Tulpehaking Nature Center opened its doors to the public as the main educational facility for the Abbott Marshlands. In the year since, the nature center has been providing visitors with a variety of programs and events, from lectures about local history and nature to live animal presentations, bluebird box workshops and art exhibits.
Family Fun Day is a chance for visitors to sample the type of fun and interactive programs they can experience at the nature center throughout the year. Live animal presentations, birdwatching walks and other activities will be scheduled throughout the day, as well as ongoing activities where visitors can test their skills as an archaeologist, and sort through what really lives under the water’s surface. New this year is a free family fun run on the trails of the marsh where participants can see if they’re more like the Tulpehaking Turtle or the Abbott Rabbit.
There also will be a raffle with prizes including tickets for kayak nature tours, a private movie screening at the nature center, and more. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Mercer County Parks, which supports nature center programs. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Visitors also are invited to bring and enjoy a picnic lunch at the nature center’s back lawn.
The nature center provides programs and exhibits that encourage visitors to explore and discover the many cultural, historic and natural resources of the Abbott Marshlands. It is owned by the County of Mercer and operated by the Mercer County Park Commission. For more information about the nature center, programs and schedule of events, go to mercercountyparks.org.
Fall hours for the nature center are Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
