Plainsboro’s Got Talent has auditions to be part of the second annual Plainsboro talent show. All ages welcome and all acts must be appropriate for families. Participants must be from Plainsboro or groups must have a majority of Plainsboro residents. All participants are allowed to register up to two acts. Acts should be no longer than two to three minutes. Top scoring audition acts will be selected for the show. Participants should not audition with the same acts they performed last year. Kelsey Theater seeks an assistant for PLAYing Around, a program for children in grades 3 to 5. Must be 17 years or older, reliable with transportation. Duties include assisting instructor with organizing students, keeping track of students, setting up scenes, and chaperoning bathroom trips. Youth Stages seeks volunteers to help with the VSA NJ fall performance of “The Secret Garden” featuring 16 performers with varying disabilities. Volunteers are needed backstage to assist the actors with entrances and exits and to help them with minor costume changes. Princeton Youth Ballet invites ballet dancers, ages 7 through 21, to the company audition for the upcoming season including “The Snow Queen” in December and “Cinderella” in May. University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro seeks adult volunteers who can donate at least three hours per week greeting and helping to direct patients and visitors arriving at the hospital. Three types of positions are available.

Guest relations ambassadors are stationed in the hospital atrium for three hour shifts between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to help direct or escort visitors to destinations in the hospital or the Medical Arts Pavilion. This position requires a significant amount of walking and standing. Concierge desk associates staff the concierge desk in the hospital atrium for three-hour shifts between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. weekdays. Applicants should have problem-solving skills and good computer literacy. Young Audiences of New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania, based in Plainsboro, is accepting applications for the Emerging Artists Creativity Hub, a teen arts program designed for young artists, ages 13 to 17, who are interested and gifted in the arts. It is intended for students to study and work in the arts far beyond the typical high school curriculum. The 10-week program is held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the College of New Jersey. Young Audiences New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania, based in Plainsboro, offers arts education scholarships for up to $10,000 to public, private, and charter preschools, elementary, middle, and high schools throughout New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania. Grant recipients will work with YA staff and their roster of professional teaching artists, to plan arts programming tailored specifically for their schools’ unique needs. Each recipient will receive funding for a variety of initiatives, including professional arts performances at their school, in-depth, hands-on workshops with professional artists, professional development to help teachers best use the arts in their classrooms, and assistance in creating a community event celebrating students’ work. Literacy New Jersey, Mercer County seeks volunteers for its upcoming tutor training course to learn how to help adult learners increase basic literacy skills for native English speakers and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) throughout Mercer County. Volunteers provide free tutoring services at a variety of public locations including libraries, workplaces, churches, and retirement homes.

All volunteer tutors are required to complete a five-hour training course to learn the fundamentals of reading and writing instruction. The course runs for five consecutive weeks from Tuesday, September 29, through October 27, either at 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. Upon completion of the training course, the volunteer tutor is matched with an adult learner. Nami Mercer seeks photographs for the upcoming “Harvest of Hope” event. Images must embody the theme of harvest and be an original photo or photo scan of an original drawing, painting, or sculpture. National Alliance on Mental Illness of New Jersey offers a 12-week education program. The course offers current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder; up-to-date information about medication compliance; discussion of the biological bases of serious mental illnesses, treatment options, and recovery.

It also includes coping skills and gaining empathy by understanding what a person with a serious mental illness experiences, problem-solving, listening and communication techniques, handling periods of crisis and relapse, and caring for the caregiver coping with worry, stress, and overload.
