Anushka Iyer, an eighth grade student at Community Middle School and the AMIGOS, a student group to develop leadership potential and personal character through training in leadership through participation in activities involved in the betterment of the middle school environment, the community, and peer-to-peer relationships, collected 300 pairs of used eyeglasses, frames, and sunglasses, and donated all of the pairs to the Lions Club. The AMIGOS,
Students at CMS, with the assistance of teachers Patrick Lepore and Cherine Zaki, and assistant principal Kyle Schimpf, started the “gift of sight” initiative by collecting used eyeglasses.
As part of the project, students visited an eyeglass recycling center to learn how used glasses are sorted, stored, cleaned, and distributed. In addition, the students had a mini-lesson from an optometrist about refraction and eye glass prescriptions.
The CMS students are continuing the project with collection boxes for used eyeglasses at the school and in the West Windsor Public Library.
