Spring athletes from high schools North and South have the month of March to prepare before the competitive season begins in early April. That practice time will be put to the test in rivalry match-ups between the Pirates and the Knights scattered throughout the season.
The boys’ golf teams face off Wednesday, April 1, and Tuesday, April 28, at Mercer Oaks, while the girls’ teams will play April 28 and Monday, May 4, at Cranbury.
Boys’ tennis also gets an early-season look at their crosstown rivals with a match Thursday, April 2, at High School North. They play at South on Monday, May 4.
The girls’ lacrosse teams meet Monday, April 13, at South. The boys play Tuesday, May 5, at South.
North and South meet twice on the baseball diamond: on Saturday, April 25, at North, and on Saturday, May 16, at Community Park in West Windsor. The softball teams play Monday, April 27, at North, and Wednesday, May 13, at South.
The track teams compete at South on Tuesday, April 14.

#b#Rowland Wins Fencing Tournament#/b#
West Windsor resident Pearl Rowland won gold in a regional youth fencing tournament held at Lilov Fencing Academy in Cedar Grove on March 8. Rowland was the top-seeded fencer heading into the tournament after winning three of her four bouts in the Y12 Girls’ saber preliminary round.
After earning a bye to advance to the quarterfinals, she defeated the eighth seed, 15-10. Rowland defeated the second seed, 15-11, in the championship bout.
“I was very pleased with how Pearl performed,” said coach John Friedberg. “Pearl works hard in practice and this result demonstrates that effort translates into continual improvement.”
Rowland trains at the Fencing Club of Mercer County in Robbinsville.
#b#WW-P Wrestlers Fall at State Championship#/b#
Two WW-P wrestlers, one from each high school, advanced to the state championship in Atlantic City on March 6 before falling in the early rounds.
Competing in the 126-pound weight class, High School South’s Nick Maher pinned his opponent from Paulsboro in the preliminary round before losing an 11-3 major decision to A.J. Vindici of Randolph in the pre-quarterfinals.
In the 220-pound weight class, North’s Vinny Porreca fell to Marc McDonald of West Essex by a 20-9 major decision in the preliminaries.
#b#Jensen Sets Record at ECAC Championships#/b#
Hamilton College senior and High School North graduate Joe Jensen competed at the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York on March 6 and 7.
He qualified for the meet in the 60 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 500 meter dash, and 4×400 meter relay but chose to run only the 200, 400, and 4×400 races.
He set a meet record in the 400 with a time of 48.36 and placed first in the 200 (21.84), making him the only athlete to win two track titles at the event — not bad for someone who only started running track during his sophomore year of college.
Jensen, who also plays baseball at Hamilton, qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in the 200 and 400. At the meet, held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, March 13 and 14, Jensen placed fourth in the 400 (48.73) and fifth in the 200 (22.0).
Prior to the event, Jensen was undefeated in seven 200 meter races on the season and was 6-1 in the 400. He won both events at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Indoor Championships for the third straight year in February.
