Visitors are welcome to come experience spring in the Sourlands.
Experience spring in the Sourlands Ecosystem Preserve on a guided tour with former D&R Greenway trustee and trail crew leader Alan Hershey. The tour of the Rockhopper Trail, West Amwell will take place Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to noon. Visitors are also able to explore the eight miles of trails on their own.
The Sourland Mountains, the largest contiguous forest in central New Jersey, is home to many songbirds and native plants. The ecosystem perserve contains examples of New Jersey’s natural heritage: old, sometimes ancient, forest; massive boulder fields; perched wetlands and hardwood swamps. The preserve is home to rare medicinal plants cherished by the Native Americans, like bloodroot, black cohosh and Virginia snakeroot. It is also critical habitat for more than 70 species of neotropical birds who migrate thousands of miles every year to raise their young in this bountiful forest.
All D&R Greenway Land Trust Second Saturday Walks are free. Space is limited, register early. Sturdy footgear and clothing for outdoor hiking, as well as water for each hiker, is essential. Cameras and binoculars are recommended.
