The Pirates did just that, wining 4-1 on May 14. Kabir Sarita, Robert Siniakowicz, and Matt Michibata each won their singles matchups in straight sets, and the first doubles team of Martin Malik and Rahul Ramanathan also won.

The 16th-seeded Pirates faced a daunting task in the first round of the Central Jersey Group 4 tournament: a match against top seeded Colts Neck, the winner of its previous 12 games. South, it turns out, was up for the challenge and came away with a 1-0 win on May 18 behind a three-hit shutout by Sean O’Brien. A second-inning RBI singles by Rob Armus generated all the offense the Pirates would need.

They advanced to play Old Bridge in the quarterfinals but could not duplicate their opening round performance. South fell, 3-2, on May 21.

North’s time in the Central Jersey Group 4 tournament was short-lived with a 6-1 loss to Sayreville in the first round. Molly Plotkin scored the Knights’ lone run.
