The Robbinsville Soccer Association was the proud host of a visiting Youth Soccer Team from the United Kingdom July 23 to 28, 2015. Based in Regents Park, St Johns Wood Football Club have enjoyed success as a team and individually. Last year they were London Futsal champions and winners of the reputable Market Road League, a league that has produced England internationals such as Ashley Cole (Roma) and Joe Cole (Aston Villa).
The team needed a few guest players to fill out their roster and invited a few players from New Jersey to tryout for roster spots. Two of Robbinsville’s own were invited to tryout, Walter and Zach Romanow. The team trained both Thursday and Friday morning, and had a friendly match versus the JENYB Elite Training Union U16 Boys Team (ranked 57 in New Jersey U16) on Thursday evening, at Robbinsville Community Park. The game was a very tight one with St Johns Wood edging out JENYB Elite Training 4-2. On Friday, after the training session the Guest Players were chosen and both Walter and Zach Romanow were added to the team roster.
The team competed in the MSSL 2015 Summer College Showcase, at Tuckahoe Farm in Hammonton on both Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. The team won their first match on Saturday against Ginga FC U15B, ranked 8th in Connecticut, 4–0, then defeated LIJSL Select PDP Boys 2000, ranked 35 in New York East, 2–0. On Sunday, the team defeated FC COPA Academy B99 Porto NPL, ranked 37 in New Jersey, 2-1, winning their bracket. In the Championship match against PDB United 99 Elite, ranked 23 in New York East, they were defeated 2–1 in a very well played game. The team placed 2nd in their Flight for the Tournament.
The Coaches, Tom Ginn (ex New York Red Bulls employee) and Joseph Paul Wright were very pleased with the hard effort and commitment of all of their players.
During the Teams stay in Robbinsville they enjoyed the hospitality of a number of residents. The team gives special thanks to local host families, Jeff and Karen Stewart, Mearl, Annalisa, Jim and Chris Challender, Dave, Erin, Molly and Conor Doran, Brian, Kelly, Tori and Brandon Sankey, Harry, Pazit, Daniel, Ethan and Gavriella Kaplan and Jim, Betty, Brian and Hugh O’Donnell. On Thursday night there was a Barbecue at the O’Donnell’s house, on Saturday evening the Challender’s hosted a Barbecue/Pool Party for the team. On Sunday afternoon the Sankey’s hosted another pool party in the afternoon for the boys (a video of the team playing pool, head ball, basketball can be viewed on the Robbinsville Soccer Associations website: rsasoccer.com) and the O’Donnell’s hosted a pasta party in the evening for them.
