Students were invited to tour a fire truck during Kisthardt Elementary’s Fire Prevention Week.
Students from all grade levels at Kisthardt Elementary School celebrated Fire Prevention Week this month, during the week of Oct. 6 through Oct. 10. Younger students read stories and discussed in-home safety practices while older students created projects and developed fire plans for their homes.
The week ended with a school-wide assembly led by the DeCou firefighters, who showed a video about importance of smoke detectors, showed off their full protective gear, and engaged the students in a question and answer session.
Afterwards, students from preschool through third grade were able to go outside, where a fire truck was waiting. They were invited to tour the fire truck, learn about all of its equipment and see where the firemen sit. Some classes even posed for pictures in front of the truck.
Many students agreed that the best part of the day was returning to their classrooms to find helmets left for them by the department.
“My class wore the helmets for the rest of the day. We look forward to our visit from DeCou Firehouse every year and we thank them for always making the time to come teach us how to stay safe,” said Jennifer Palombi, Kindergarten teacher at Kisthardt Elementary.
