Princeton-Blairstown Center (PBC) announced the launch of its Girls’ Leadership Program on Oct. 11, coinciding with International Day of the Girl, a globally recognized date established by the United Nations in 2011.
PBC’s new programs were identified as one of the year’s best examples of innovative girls’ leadership development by the International Day of the Girl Summit organizing committee. The committee selected short videos of PBC’s programs, along with summaries of the curriculum, and featured them during the month of September in global webcasts, culminating in a celebration at the United Nation on Oct. 10. PBC leadership, along with the 12 students who designed the Programs, were invited to the United Nations’ celebration and were joined by over 500 girls and girl-advocates from around the world, prominent members of the United Nations community, and government representatives from Canada, Peru, and Turkey.
Girl Scout Troop 60518, a group of 11 girls, aged 10 to 14, designed four new PBC Girls’ Leadership Programs in conjunction with Princeton-Blairstown Center and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation staff. The Programs consist of four modules: Dare to Discover Yourself: An introspective view of one’s own leadership journey; Connect to Courage: Creative ways to lead teams and understand others’ perspectives; Scientific Sleuths/Environmental Expedition: Outdoor science exploration for girls; and Spectacular Survival Skills: Preparedness for wilderness survival for girls.
The Programs received a partial sponsorship by Janssen Research & Development, LLC, which will enable 25 at-risk girls who participate in PBC’s school-based programs at Rivera Middle School in Trenton, to travel to the Blairstown Campus three times during the 2014-2015 school year and participate in a one-day Campus Expedition to Princeton University.
PBC is an independent non-profit whose mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable young people through integrated experiential and adventure-based programming. The Center’s wide variety of year-round, multi service programs serve over 5,000 students from the Mid-Atlantic States.
