No matter how good a school system is, the role of parents and extended family members in the students’ education is never taken lightly. The Community Education program of the West Windsor-Plainsboro District is taking a step to increase the interaction with the family through its new “Parent University” program.
The inaugural event of the program will be Monday, January 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Grover Middle School theater. Registration for this event, which is free, is required at www.ww-p.org under “2014 Adult and Youth Programs.”
Titled “How To Help Children Become Better Learners,” the program features author Nathan Levy. Based on his 35 years as a teacher and principal, Levy has developed teaching strategies to encourage the love of learning in students of all ages. Among his many books are titles such as “Stories with Holes, Whose Clues?” and “100 Intriguing Questions.”
A Monroe resident, Levy has mentored more than 30 current principals and superintendents as well as helped to train thousands of teachers and parents in better ways to engage children in their education. Levy has led workshops in Reading, Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Critical Thinking, Gifted, Special Education, and Classroom Management.
Parent University will feature programs and lectures for parents and community members. Details for the next program, expected to be in March, are still being arranged by Melissa Conklin and Alicia Boyko of the Community Education program.
