More than 15,000 children are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes every year. That was the reason why Bordentown Regional Middle School students and faculty decided to participate in their third annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Kids Walk on the school track Nov. 14.
The students raised over $5,400 for JDRF, exceeding their total from last year, which was $5,000. The funds were raised over the course of two weeks starting Oct. 24, when students were educated about diabetes and how it affects children and adults. In that time, students asked family and friends to support them to raise awareness and funds to support their JDRF Kids Walk by purchasing pairs of sneakers.
Grade level incentives were also offered to encourage the children. If a grade sold more than 150 sneakers, they got to “silly string” their teachers. If 300 sneakers were sold, students could have a Cheetos toss, and if 600 sneakers per grade level were sold, students could “Pie in the Face” their principal, assistant principal and superintendent.
