Pennington School’s Silva Gallery of Art is set to display work by five local artists.
“5: five artists, five visions” features work by Arlene Gale Milgram of Trenton, Susan Kubota and Judy Tobie of Lawrenceville, Renee Kumar of West Windsor and Jean Burdick of Bucks County, Pa.
These five women meet regularly to critique each other’s art and share ideas. This “Group of 5,” as they call themselves, is tied together by the experience of making art.
Burdick creates layers of superimposed textures and images, fusing painting and printmaking to build upon her observations of the interconnected and interdependent systems of nature.
Gale Milgram is a mixed-media artist who employs deconstruction and construction processes in her work by overworking her surfaces and then physically repairing, sometimes even stitching her work back together.
Kubota works in textiles and wood to create muses, idols, and narrative fabric wall hangings that translate human folly, infirmity and emotional upheaval.
Tobie creates handmade paper, which she transforms into art that is both driven by the material and built around a concept.
Kumar focuses on political, spiritual, and technological issues. Primarily a watercolorist, for this show Kumar has ventured into gouache, acrylics, and wax crayon to convey the change she senses in the world.
The exhibition is scheduled to run March 25 to April 25. A reception with the artists is set for 5:30 to 8 p.m. April 11
Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
