Sustainable Lawrence is set to present a screening of Bag It.
The organization teamed up with the Central Jersey Sierra Club, Environmental Education Fund and the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library System to present the film about the secret role of plastic in our lives and environment.
The film’s hero, Jeb Berrier, takes the audience on an international journey that begins in his hometown in Colorado with one plastic bag containing a plastic yogurt container and plastic spoon. He shoves the bag in a container filled with other bags in his kitchen; the sheer volume of the pile sends him off on a quest to explore how plastic bags and other disposable plastic items became so popular.
On the way he discovers the serious implications of plastic accumulation to the environment, and how plastic chemicals are finding their way into our bodies.
The screening is followed by a question-and-answer session with Surfrider Foundation’s Northeast Chapter executive director John Weber. The Surfrider Foundation’s Rise Above Plastics program addresses plastic bag pollution.
Sustainable Lawrence is committed to reducing the community’s dependence on harmful chemicals and wasteful use of synthetic substances. The Environmental Education Fund uses documentary film to educate and inspire. The Central Jersey Sierra Club is at the center of a growing coalition of organizations focusing on this issue as a way of reducing municipal solid waste.
The screening is scheduled for 2 to 4:30 p.m. March 15 at the Lawrence Library Branch, 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville.
