BRHS theater students nominated for Greater Philadelphia Cappie Awards

Bordentown Regional High School theater program been nominated for seven Greater Philadelphia 2014 Cappie Awards.

The Cappies is a national program that honors and celebrates the achievements of high school theatre, which culminates in an annual Gala. The Cappies Gala is scheduled for May 10 at the Eastern Regional Performing Arts Center.

In a first for BRHS, the 2013-2014 BRHS Cappies Critic Team has been nominated for the Outstanding Critic Team Award.

The team has spent the school year attending area productions and serving as representatives for the Cappies program. Their reviews have been selected for publication in area newspapers 10 times this year. This the most the BRHS Critic Team has been published in a single year since the school began participating in the Cappies program five years ago.

This year’s team, under the guidance of lead critic senior Elise LeMassena, included senior Hannah Ayars, juniors James Bullock, Haley Szenczi, and Ivan Trancon, and sophomore Cynthia Reynolds.

Several students were nominated for their performance in the school’s spring musical, The Wedding Singer.

2014 Cappie Spirit Award winner Kaitlyn Anthony represents Bordentown in three categories this year, a first for a BRHS student. In addition to the winning the Spirit Award for BRHS, the senior received her third Cappie nomination in a row in the category of Outstanding Dancer, which she won last year for her role as Lucille in No No Nanette. Anthony has also been nominated for in the category of Outstanding Makeup for her work on the cast of The Wedding Singer.

Senior Matt Dalton has been nominated as Outstanding Male Vocalist for his performance as Robbie in The Wedding Singer. He has previously been nominated for as 2012 Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical for his work in Legally Blonde, and as 2013 Outstanding Male Vocalist as Tom in No No Nanette. In addition, Dalton won third place in the state in the Junior Auditions category at the 2013 New Jersey State Thespian Festival.

Sophomore Cynthia Reynolds has been nominated as Outstanding Comedic Actress in a Musical for her role as the rapping grandmother Rosie in The Wedding Singer. She also received a nomination for her work with the critic team; her reviews have been chosen for publication in the Philadelphia Inquirer four times this year, which a new record for a BRHS critic.

Freshman Erin Caltiere earned a nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as The Cat Lady in the song Casualty of Love.

BRHS’s 2012 musical, Legally Blonde, was awarded five Cappies, including the 2012 Greater Philadelphia Cappie Award for Outstanding Musical.

The next production for the award-winning thespians of BRHS is their annual One Act Play Festival, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.May 2 at the Bordentown Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 at the door.
