On behalf of the Plainsboro Township Committee, I would like to update you on developments at Plainsboro Plaza.
The owner of Plainsboro Plaza, Onyx Equities, has announced the signing of two new tenant leases. Rainbow Academy, a pre-school/daycare facility with eighteen locations throughout New Jersey, will be locating in a portion of the space formerly occupied by Ace Hardware. Also, Indus American Bank will be opening its fifth bank branch in the center, located upfront, along Schalks Crossing Road.
Onyx Equities continues to target a full-service grocery store for the plaza. In support of the owner’s efforts to secure a new grocery store for Plainsboro, I recently sent letters to the chief executives of seven companies. In the letter, I pledged the township’s cooperation and assured them that our community would embrace their store should they come to Plainsboro. To this end, Onyx informs us that they are in active discussions with several grocers ranging in size from 40,000 to 61,000 square feet. Township officials continue to press Onyx, making it clear that a grocery store is an essential component of a successful shopping center and is urgently needed in the community. As a private business transaction, we have no role in these discussions.
Accordingly, in February the Plainsboro Planning Board approved upgrades to Plainsboro Plaza. The owners will be renovating the building facade and making enhancements to its appearance. There will be significant improvements to the parking lot to include landscaping upgrades and repaving and restriping of the lot.
Township officials are closely monitoring developments and continue to support the owner’s efforts.
