John A. Rossi Jr., 86, of West Windsor died July 4. He served in the Army for 39 years, retiring as a sergeant major.
Survivors include his wife, Laura (Kauffman) Rossi; two sons and daughter-in-law, John and Gloria Cota-Robles, and Mark and Sabrina Kurtz-Rossi; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth Ann and James Conaghan; a sister, Evelyn Rossi-DeRitis; and six grandchildren. Phyllis Kurshan, 88, a former teacher in West Windsor and Plainsboro schools, died July 10 at Princeton Windrows. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Kurshan lived in the area for 68 years.
She received a bachelor of science degree cum laude from New York University’s School of Education in 1947. She began teaching kindergarten in Plainsboro, moved on to first grade, and taught in Plainsboro for 32 years, never taking a day of sick leave. Kurshan introduced an innovative reading program and computer education in the Plainsboro elementary school. After Plainsboro and West Windsor townships merged their school districts, Kurshan served as president of its education association and helped negotiate teachers’ contracts.
After her retirement from teaching in 1986, she was a bank teller at Princeton Trust, a salesperson and instructor at Clayton’s Knitting Shop, an office assistant at an accounting firm, and a receptionist for 14 years with the New Jersey Hospital Association, which she left at the age of 81.
A founding member of the Jewish Center of Princeton, she was a choir member, Sunday school teacher, volunteer, and member of its board of directors. She was named Congregant of the Year in 2003. She was one of the founders of the Silver Circle, a social group for seniors, and was its leader.
Survivors include her husband, Jerome Kurshan; a son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Alisa Kurshan; and a daughter, Rachel Kurshan; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Alex Sterman.

Harriet D. Allen, 83, of Rochester, New York, died July 18. Survivors include by two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Barbara Allen of West Windsor, and Ira and Sobeida Allen; a daughter, Rhonda Allen; and four grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Humane Society.
Robert E. Tindall, 72, of West Windsor died July 18 at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton. He lived and worked on the family farm. Also active in the construction industry, Tindall worked at Scheideler Excavating.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Vinnie Losey; his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and David Redding; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Doug and Linda Tindall, Gary and Nanci Tindall, and Kevin and Kathy Tindall; his only grandchild, Lance Corporal Emily Losey, USMC; and many nieces and nephews.
