Mercer County seniors citizens have another opportunity to receive fresh-produce checks that will enable them to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farm stands.

Representatives from the Mercer County Nutrition Office will offer the checks on 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Rutgers Extension Building adjacent to the Trenton Farmers Market, on Spruce Street in Lawrence Township.

Eligible senior citizens will receive checks to redeem for fresh produce at various vendor sites throughout the county. Each person will receive four $5 checks for a total of $20. Checks are valid until Nov. 30.

Checks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. There are a limited number of checks available.

The Farmers Market program was developed to provide low-income seniors with checks they can use to purchase fresh produce grown by New Jersey farmers. The Mercer County Nutrition Project is the lead agency and coordinator in Mercer County for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Eligible individuals must be at least 60 years old and pick up the checks in person.

Qualifications are a single person’s income must not exceed $21,590 per year or $1,800 monthly and a couple’s income must not exceed $29,101 per year or $2,425 monthly.

Seniors are required to bring a proof of residency and identity, like a driver’s license, utility bill or birth certificate. They also must show proof of income in the form of an income tax return, Social Security statement, Medicare card or Food Stamp Program card.

After receiving the checks, seniors can use them at participating stands. Checks must be signed in front of the farmer.
