Princeton Public Library is set to host a Diwali celebration Oct. 27.
The library is scheduled to celebrate the culture of India with a presentation about Diwali 2 p.m. in the Community Room.
Diwali is a celebration of the victory of good over evil and of light over darkness and has major religious significance for those who are Hindu, Sikhs and Jains no matter where they live in the world. It will be observed Nov. 3-7 this year.
Those who attend will be invited to immerse themselves in the culture of India by participating in traditional dances, wearing Indian clothes, making a craft, listening to stories and enjoying visual displays.
Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is one of the most important Hindu celebrations of the year. Families mark the occasion by lighting small clay pots filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. Firecrackers are set off to drive away evil spirits. During Diwali, celebrants traditionally wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.
