The Pennington Players are set to hold open auditions for their February/March 2014 production of Terence McNally’s Mater Class.
Auditions are scheduled for 7 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at Mercer County Community College’s Communication Building, 1200 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor.
Performances are scheduled for February 21, 22, 23, 28, March 1, and 2 at Kelsey Theatre.
Master Class is based on a master class called “The Lyric Tradition” Maria Callas taught at Juilliard School. This course was a series of semiweekly two-hour public working sessions with the variety of voices and repertoires. Callas intended to pass on her knowledge and experience to the students collectively, as well as to the public at large.
During the play, Callas stands in front of an audience teaching the class. An accompanist sits at the piano.
Rehearsals with the actress cast as Callas are set to begin in December. Rehearsals with the accompanist and the three singers are set to in January.
Most rehearsals are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Saturday afternoons
The Pennington Players are looking for actors for four roles.
The role of Callas is for a woman in her mid 50s. This is a non-singing role with extensive monologues. The character stays on stage for the entire play.
Those auditioning for Callas must prepare and fully memorize two monologues; they also may be asked to do a reading from the script.
They also must prepare the aria cited for the role. An accompanist will be provided.
The roles of Sophie De Palma and Sharon Graham are for a women in their mid 20s. The roles includes operatic soprano with dialogue. De Palma sings “Ah non credea mirarti” from Bellini’s La Sonnambula and Graham sings “Vieni t’affretta” from Verdi’s Macbeth.
The role of Anthony Candolino is for a man in his mid to late 20’s. The role includes operatic tenor with dialogue; he sings “Recondita armonia” from Puccini’s Tosca.
